CaratCarat refers to the weight of the diamond –but weight is not the same as size. Diamonds and other gemstones are weighed in metric carats: one carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Like a dollar is divided into 100 cents, a carat is divided into 100 points. Diamond weights are expressed in carats and decimals, such as 1.50 ct. would be one point five carats. The larger the stone the higher the value per carat, for instance; a 2 carat diamond costs more per carat than a 1 carat diamond of equal quality.
