About Us

creators of fine jewelryMorays Jewelers is a sixth generation fine jeweler, with the seventh generation in training.  We began in Austria and in 1900 Max Schechter emigrated to New York.  He had a pushcart on Orchard Street and sold pocket watches.  He and a partner opened the first jewelry exchange In the twenties and he gave each of his sons a booth and $10,000 to get started.

original moraysHis son Murray suffered from MS and was advised to move to Miami for his health, and so he did in 1942.  He opened Morays Jewelers in 1944 on his son, Richard’s birthday, January 25th.  Richard took over the 500 square foot store for his ailing father in 1958.  In 1974 he moved to  a new 900 square foot location, with air conditioning and a bathroom!  In 1984 he grew again to 1400 square feet and a walk in vault!

On January 1st 1994 his daughter, Sandy, and her husband Bob Hequin bought the store.  In keeping with tradition, On October 28th, 1999 our daughter, Tiffany’s 5th birthday, we opened the store we are now located in.

From day one our mission has been to make a trip to Morays an experience like no other. For clients accustomed to shopping malls, walking into Morays is a luxury beyond the usual. The staff is knowledgeable, the selection is incredible, and the prices are fair. We try to make everyone feel at home, whether it be Cappuccino and cookies, a big screen TV, or the fact that your personal sales associate knows your name and what you have purchased in the past. We are happy to call our clients friends.
